TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall
for parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:56 pm Tuesday, 18 March 2025.
Heavy rainfall developing about parts of northeast Queensland tonight.
Weather Situation
Convergence between a very humid northeasterly flow from the Coral Sea and a southeasterly wind surge pushing up the central Queensland coast is expected to strengthen during the overnight period into Wednesday morning. This will lead to an increase in the potential for bands of heavy showers and a few thunderstorms about the coast and ranges of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and far southern parts of the North Tropical Coast.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin
The risk of HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected to gradually increase through the warning area during this evening and overnight, including across the Townsville area, and should persist into Wednesday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals of 120 to 160 mm are likely, with isolated totals to 240 mm possible.
Conditions should ease by late Wednesday morning as the southeasterly wind surge weakens.
Flood Watches and Warnings are current for this area. Please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings/
Locations which may be affected include Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Ayr, Giru and Lucinda.
202 mm was recorded at Cardwell Gap in 6 hours to 2:29 pm
Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Tuesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and emergency services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

ENSO status: La Niña-like conditions. IOD status: Neutral. SAM status: Positive. Trending neutral. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is in a La Niña-like pattern. The US declaring a La Niña event has started, but this event has not met the BoM definition. A La Niña typically increases rainfall over northern and eastern Australia, while reducing rainfall over southern coastal Australia and western Tas. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in a neutral phase and does not play a part in Australia's climate during this time of year. The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is in a short positive phase. Recent forecasts no particular evidence towards a positive or negative phase in autumn, although the long-wave pattern indicates that cold fronts are a bit more likely for Australia's longitudes over the next few months. During summer and early autumn, a positive SAM increases rainfall over most of eastern Australia, and decreases rainfall for SA, Vic and western Tas. Rainfall outlooks are showing aboveaverage rainfall over large parts of northern Australia in March and early April (forecast late monsoon activity). Above average rainfall is expected for the NSW coast through autumn, with wetter conditions also developing over western WA from late autumn. SA, Vic and Tas are expected to be average to slightly below average, with average conditions elsewhere.
