RENEWED MINOR FLOOD PEAK ESTIMATED TO BE OCCURRING AT GLENEAGLE
MINOR FLOOD PEAK EXPECTED AT ABERGOWRIE BRIDGE AROUND MIDDAY
MINOR FLOOD PEAK AT HALIFAX SUNDAY MORNING
River levels remain elevated across the upper Herbert River catchment on Sunday, as lingering shower activity continues. Further downstream across the lower Herbert River catchment, renewed rises are occurring as upstream floodwater arrives.
Further showers and storms are forecast through the remainder of Sunday into Monday. This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as necessary.
A Flood Watch is no longer current for catchments between Cooktown and Mackay, including the Herbert River catchment.
Herbert River to Nash's Crossing:
Minor flooding continues along the Herbert River in the Gleneagle area, with further small upstream rises expected overnight Sunday.
No recent observations are available for Gleneagle manual gauge, however based on the nearby automatic gauge the river level is estimated to be around a peak of 6.00 metres on Sunday morning, above the minor flood level (4.50 metres).
With further showers possible during Sunday, the Herbert River at Gleneagle is likely to remain above the minor flood level (4.50 m) into Monday.
Herbert River downstream of Nash's Crossing:
Renewed minor flooding is occurring along the Herbert River downstream of Nash's Crossing.
The Herbert River at Abergowrie Bridge is currently at 6.60 metres and rising, above the minor flood level (6.00 m).
The Herbert River at Abergowrie Bridge is expected to peak near 6.80 metres around midday on Sunday. The river level is likely to fall below the minor flood level (6.00 m) overnight Sunday into Monday.
The Herbert River at Ingham Pump Station is currently at 7.49 metres and rising, below the minor flood level (10.00 metres).
The Herbert River at Ingham Pump Station will remain below the minor flood level (10.00 m) during Sunday into Monday.
The Herbert River at Gairloch is currently at 6.94 metres and rising, below the minor flood level (9.50 metres).
The Herbert River at Gairloch will remain below the minor flood level (9.50 m) during Sunday into Monday.
No current observations are available for the Herbert River at Halifax, however the river level is estimated to be approaching a peak around the minor flood level (4.00 metres) on Sunday morning.

ENSO status: La Niña Watch. IOD status: Neutral. SAM status: Negative. Trending positive. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is in a La Niña Watch. The current technical definition of a La Niña is only a small chance to be met, although ocean and atmospheric conditions do resemble a La Niña pattern. Trade winds are still stronger than average along the western equatorial Pacific, and Relative-Nino Index (factors in equatorial ocean temperatures elsewhere around the world, compensating for the background warming signal) is below the threshold. A La Niña typically leads to cooler temperatures northern Australia during summer, while producing higher temperatures for western/southwestern WA, Vic and western Tas. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in a neutral phase. Recent conditions have been like a negative IOD, but it is too late in the year for this climate driver to develop. Once the monsoon establishes over northern Australia, the IOD has no impact on Australia’s weather. The Southern AnnularMode (SAM) is in a brief negative phase, having switched a positive phase in November. Forecasts predict it will become neural in mid-late December and become positive in January and February. A positive SAM decreases the frequency of cold fronts, with more regular high pressure systems and easterly winds. During summer, this increases rainfall over eastern Australia, and reduces rainfall over southeastern SA, western Vic and western Tas. Rainfall outlooks are showing above average rainfall over large parts of the country during summer, with closer to average conditions for the southwest corner of WA, southern SA and Vic, and central parts of Tas.
