The hemispheric long wave pattern has remained stable in recent weeks. There are five main troughs. Currently the most significant troughs are near the longitudes of South Africa, the Indian Ocean, New Zealand, the southeast Pacific, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 1 May to 5 May, 6 May to 10 May, and 16 May to 20 May. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 2 May to 6 May. Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 6 May to 10 May, 16 May to 20 May, and 20 May to 24 May.
Forecast ExplanationThis forecast is produced by a multi-model ensemble consisting of dynamical atmospheric models, which are forced by the latest observed atmosphere, ocean, land and ice conditions. The models are designed to simulate features of the real atmosphere, including the daily movement of long and short wave patterns in the Southern Hemisphere.
The future probability of rain in each district is estimated using output from the multi-model ensemble, combined with historical information about the difference between the model forecasts and observed rainfall.
In this deterministic framework the skill of the forecast tends to decrease with time, however the forecasts are updated daily to provide the latest estimates of rainfall probability out to 28 days.

ENSO status: Neutral. IOD status: Neutral, potentially trending negative during winter. SAM status: Positive. La Niña has concluded, with neutral conditions expected until at least the end of Autumn. A few models are predicting La Niña conditions to return later this year, while the majority of models predict neutral conditions. While La Niña has returned to neutral, the oceans around northern Australia are warmer than normal. This is expected to generate above normal rainfall for much of Australia during the next month or so. Some models are suggesting a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) may develop during winter, which would increase rainfall across parts of Australia during winter. During Autumn, many parts of Australia are likely to be wetter than normal, due to warmer waters off the northern coast of Australia. Southern parts of SA, VIC, most of TAS and southwest WA are likely to observe normal precipitation for the time of year. During winter, much of the Australia is likely to bewetter than normal, apart from far southwestern WA, southern VIC and much of TAS. The negative IOD may be playing a part in this, potentially feeding moisture into cold fronts sweeping across Australia's snowfields. Therefore a normal to above normal snow season is forecast.
