MINOR FLOODING EASING SLOWLY BETWEEN CUNNAMULLA BRIDGE AND ROCKY
Minor flooding is slowly easing along the Warrego River.
Floodwaters along the lower reaches of the Warrego River will continue to travel into New South Wales over the next few days. A moderate flood warning remains current for the New South Wales section of the Warrego River.
Rainfall totals recorded in the 24-hour period to 9am Friday of up to 10 mm across parts of the Warrego catchment, with an isolated 23 mm recorded at Augathella. No significant rainfall is forecast for the next few days.

Warrego River downstream of Charleville:
Minor flooding is easing along the lower Warrego River downstream of Charleville between Cunnamulla Bridge and Rocky.
The Warrego River at Cunnamulla Bridge is currently at 6.32 metres and falling slowly, above the minor flood level.
The Warrego River at Cunnamulla Bridge is likely to remain above the minor flood level (6.00 m) across the weekend and into Monday.

The Warrego River at Rocky is currently at 3.70 metres and falling slowly, above the minor flood level.
The Warrego River at Rocky is expected to remain above the minor flood level (2.50 m) across the weekend and into Monday.

MINOR FLOODING LIKELY ALONG THE COOPER CREEK AT WINDORAH FROM LATE FRIDAY
Floodwaters along the lower reaches of the Barcoo River peaked at Retreat during Thursday evening. River levels are now easing. Minor flooding is likely at Windorah from late Friday.
No significant rainfall has been observed across the Cooper Creek basin for the last several days. No significant rainfall is forecast for the next few days.

Barcoo River downstream of Isisford:
Minor flooding is easing along the Barcoo River downstream of Isisford.
The Barcoo River at Retreat peaked at 4.09 metres around 5:00 pm Thursday 18 April with minor flooding. The Barcoo River at Retreat is currently at 3.93 metres and steady, above the minor flood level (2.14 m).
The Barcoo River at Retreat is likely to remain above the minor flood level (2.14 m) over the weekend.

Cooper Creek:
Minor flooding is likely along the Cooper Creek.
The Cooper Ck at Windorah (Main Channel) TM is currently at 2.64 metres and steady, below the minor flood level (3.0 m).

ENSO status: Inactive. El Niño ended. IOD status: Neutral, becoming positive. SAM status: Positive, favouring positive. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has returned to an inactive phase for the first time since August 2021. Ocean cooling is occurring in the eastern Pacific, with 3 out of 7 global models forecasting a La Niña to develop in 2024. Warmer than normal waters are situated in the Coral Sea, providing moisture and humidity to the east coast. The atmosphere continues to be firmly neutral after weakening early in the year. A neutral ENSO typically has no significant impact on Australian rainfall during winter. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in a neutral phase. Ocean temperatures are high across most of the Indian Ocean, and the IOD index is spiking in response. Persistent southeasterly winds have set in over the eastern Indian Ocean, signalling that the atmosphere is starting to respond to the ocean patterns. All international models are suggesting the IOD will strengthen into apositive phase over the next 2-3 months, with significant upwelling to start near Indonesia possibly in May. A positive IOD reduces the number of northwest cloudbands that cross Australia during winter and spring, reducing rainfall across central and southeastern parts of Australia. The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is positive and will favour a positive phase during autumn and into winter. A positive SAM increases easterly winds, increasing rainfall and thunderstorm activity in the east. A positive SAM also reduces cold fronts and rainfall over southern Australia, particularly for southwest WA.
